Sublimation

Achieve vibrant, full colour prints on compatible products with professional sublimation printing designed to last.
Home >> Sublimation

Sublimation printing is one of the most versatile and vibrant printing methods available today, capable of transferring full-colour designs onto both apparel and hard surfaces with stunning, lasting results. Unlike traditional printing methods, sublimation works by converting ink into gas and bonding it directly into the material meaning the design becomes part of the product itself rather than sitting on top of it. At WodiPrints, we use sublimation printing to help individuals create deeply personal, beautifully finished products that make every gift feel truly one of a kind.

Whether you are looking to create a custom mug that holds a memory, a personalised phone case that feels entirely yours, or vibrant sportswear that stands out on and off the field, sublimation delivers colour, clarity, and permanence that other methods simply cannot match.

Cost Considerations

The cost of sublimation printing is determined by the product type, size, and quantity of your order. Because sublimation produces full-colour prints with no additional charge per colour, it is an extremely cost-effective method for designs that are rich in colour, gradients, or photographic detail. There are no screen setup fees or colour separation charges  your full design prints exactly as supplied.

Design Considerations for Sublimation

To get the best results from your sublimation order, please keep the following in mind:

  • File formats accepted: .png, .jpg, .pdf, .ai, .eps
  • All artwork must be high resolution — minimum 300dpi at print size
  • Sublimation works best on white or light-coloured surfaces and polyester-based fabrics
  • Colours will appear slightly different on screen compared to the finished product — we recommend reviewing a proof before large orders
  • Dark backgrounds in your design will appear exactly as supplied — there is no white ink base layer with sublimation
  • Convert all text to outlines to avoid font issues
  • Full bleed designs are possible and encouraged — sublimation can cover an entire surface edge to edge

Advantages of Sublimation Printing

  • Vivid, full-colour results

Sublimation can reproduce photographs, gradients, and complex full-colour artwork with exceptional clarity — making it ideal for detailed, personalised designs.

  • The design becomes part of the product

Because the ink bonds into the material rather than sitting on top of it, sublimation prints will not crack, peel, fade, or wash out over time.

  • Perfect for personal gifts

From mugs printed with a loved one’s photo to cushions, phone cases, and keychains carrying a special memory, sublimation transforms everyday objects into meaningful, lasting gifts.

  • Full surface coverage

Sublimation allows you to print edge to edge across the entire surface of a product — no borders, no limits, just your design in full.

  • No colour limitations

Unlike screen printing or embroidery, sublimation reproduces your full design in one pass with no additional cost per colour. Gradients, shadows, and photographic imagery are all possible.

  • Consistent, repeatable results

Once your artwork is approved, sublimation delivers consistent colour and quality across every item in your order.

Things to Consider with Sublimation

  • Only works on white or light surfaces

Sublimation ink is transparent, which means it requires a white or very light base to show colours accurately. It is not suitable for dark-coloured garments or products.

  • Polyester and polymer-coated surfaces only

Sublimation bonds with polyester fibres and polymer-coated hard surfaces. It is not suitable for 100% cotton garments or uncoated natural materials.

  • Colours may shift slightly from screen to print

As with all printing methods, on-screen colours and printed colours can vary slightly due to differences in screen calibration and the sublimation process itself.

  • Not ideal for very small text or fine lines

While sublimation handles detailed artwork well, extremely fine text or hair-thin lines may not reproduce with perfect sharpness at smaller sizes.

  • Hard surfaces require specialist sublimation-ready blanks

For mugs, phone cases, keychains, and similar products, the item itself must be sublimation-ready — coated with a special polymer layer that allows the ink to bond. WodiPrints supplies all appropriate blanks for your order.

Sublimation vs DTF Printing

Both sublimation and DTF (Direct to Film) printing produce high-quality, full-colour results, but they are suited to different products and use cases. Sublimation is the preferred method for hard surface personalisation and all-over apparel printing on polyester fabrics, while DTF offers greater flexibility across fabric types including cotton.

Sublimation Printing Frequently Asked Questions

What is sublimation printing?
Sublimation printing is a process where heat converts specially formulated ink into gas, which then bonds permanently into the surface of a compatible material. The result is a vibrant, full-colour design that becomes part of the product itself — not a layer sitting on top of it.

What products can be sublimation printed?
At WodiPrints, we offer sublimation printing on a wide range of products including mugs, tumblers, phone cases, keychains, cushions, and polyester apparel. If you have a specific product in mind, get in touch and we will let you know if sublimation is suitable.

Will sublimation colours fade over time?
No. Because the ink bonds into the material at a molecular level, sublimation prints are exceptionally resistant to fading, even after repeated washing or daily use. This makes sublimation one of the most durable personalisation methods available.

Can sublimation be done on dark coloured products?
Unfortunately not. Sublimation ink is transparent and requires a white or light-coloured surface to display colours accurately. For dark garments or surfaces, DTF printing is a better alternative.

Is sublimation printing good for gifts?
Sublimation is one of the best printing methods for personalised gifts. The ability to reproduce photographs, names, dates, and full-colour artwork on everyday objects like mugs, cushions, and phone cases makes it a popular choice for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and other special occasions.

How long does a sublimation order take?
Turnaround times vary depending on the product and order size. Get in touch with the WodiPrints team for current lead times and we will do our best to meet your deadline.
